Paseo de la Reforma
During the Second Empire (1864-1867), Maximilian had an avenue built to connect Chapultepec Castle, his residence, with the city center, and named it Paseo de la Emperatriz in honor of Empress Carlota. After the empire fell, President Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada renamed it Paseo de la Reforma in honor of the Reform Laws.
Today it is Mexico City’s most emblematic avenue, home to monuments such as the Angel of Independence.
