Obraje

Obrajes were the main manufacturing centers of colonial New Spain, producing above all woolen cloth for the local market. Cities such as Puebla, Querétaro, and Texcoco became important obraje towns.

Working conditions inside them were often harsh: many laborers were confined to the workshop and bound by debts, which made obrajes a frequent target of criticism even in colonial times.
