Maximiliano de Habsburgo

Maximilian of Habsburg was the Austrian archduke installed as emperor of Mexico in 1864, during the French Intervention and with the support of Mexican conservatives. When the republican forces of Benito Juárez prevailed, Maximilian was captured, tried, and executed by firing squad on the Cerro de las Campanas in Querétaro on June 19, 1867, alongside the generals Miguel Miramón and Tomás Mejía.

His death ended the Second Mexican Empire and restored the Republic under Juárez. Don’t mix up 1864, the year he arrived in Mexico, with 1867, the year he was executed.
