Maximato

The Maximato (1928-1934) was the period after Plutarco Elías Calles left the presidency in which he continued to dominate Mexican politics as the “Jefe Máximo” (supreme chief) of the Revolution. Three presidents governed under his shadow: Emilio Portes Gil, Pascual Ortiz Rubio, and Abelardo L. Rodríguez.

The period ended when Lázaro Cárdenas, president from 1934, broke with Calles and expelled him from the country in 1936. Don’t confuse the Maximato with Calles’s own presidential term, which ran from 1924 to 1928.
