Juan Pablos

The first printing press in the Americas began operating in Mexico City in 1539, run by Juan Pablos as the agent of the Seville printer Juan Cromberger. Among its earliest works were catechisms and religious texts in Spanish and Nahuatl, printed to support the evangelization of New Spain.

The building known as the Casa de la Primera Imprenta de América still stands near the Zócalo. Don’t confuse this date with 1551, the year the Royal University of Mexico was founded.
