It was the first international trip of John Paul II’s papacy, in January 1979. The pope visited Mexico five times and in 2002 canonized Juan Diego, the Indigenous man of the Virgin of Guadalupe apparitions. López Portillo is also remembered for nationalizing the banks in 1982.
