Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez

Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez was the wife of the corregidor (royal magistrate) of Querétaro, which is why she is remembered as La Corregidora. She took part in the Querétaro conspiracy of 1810 and, when the plot was discovered, managed to warn the insurgents in time — a warning that led Hidalgo to launch the uprising early, on September 16, 1810.

She is one of the great heroines of Mexican independence, alongside figures such as Leona Vicario, and her portrait has appeared on Mexican coins and banknotes.
