Emiliano Zapata

Emiliano Zapata was born in Anenecuilco, Morelos, and led the Liberation Army of the South during the Mexican Revolution. He fought for the return of land to the villages, a demand set out in his Plan of Ayala and summed up in the slogan “Land and Liberty.”

Zapata was ambushed and assassinated in 1919 at the Chinameca hacienda. Don’t confuse him with Francisco (Pancho) Villa, the great revolutionary leader of the north, who commanded the División del Norte.
