El Despertador Americano
El Despertador Americano (“The American Awakener”) began publication in Guadalajara in December 1810, while Miguel Hidalgo held the city. Edited by the priest Francisco Severo Maldonado, it spread the ideas and news of the insurgency and is considered Mexico’s first insurgent newspaper.
Don’t confuse it with later insurgent papers such as El Ilustrador Americano or the Correo Americano del Sur, which appeared during the Morelos phase of the war.
