Álvaro Obregón

Álvaro Obregón, a leading general of the Revolution, was president of Mexico from 1920 to 1924 and was elected again in 1928. Before he could take office, he was assassinated in July 1928 by José de León Toral at a restaurant in San Ángel, Mexico City.

His death opened the political crisis that led to the Maximato, the period in which Plutarco Elías Calles dominated politics from behind the scenes, and to the founding of the National Revolutionary Party (PNR) in 1929. Don’t confuse him with Venustiano Carranza, who was assassinated earlier, in 1920, while still in office.
