Partido Nacional Revolucionario

The PNR was created to unify the revolutionary strongmen after Álvaro Obregón’s assassination. In 1938 Lázaro Cárdenas transformed it into the Party of the Mexican Revolution (PRM), and in 1946 it became today’s PRI.

Calles, president from 1924 to 1928, also founded the Bank of Mexico and later dominated politics as ‘Jefe Máximo’ during the Maximato.
