Instituto Federal Electoral

The Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) was created in October 1990, following the highly contested presidential election of 1988, to organize federal elections through an authority independent of the government. Its creation was a key step in Mexico’s transition to democracy.

In 2014, the IFE was transformed into the National Electoral Institute (INE), which took on additional responsibilities for local elections. Do not confuse the founding of the IFE in 1990 with its conversion into the INE in 2014.
