Adolfo López Mateos
The ISSSTE, the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers, was created at the end of 1959, during the presidency of Adolfo López Mateos (1958-1964). It provides health care, pensions, housing loans and other social security benefits to employees of the Mexican government.
Do not confuse it with the IMSS, the Mexican Social Security Institute, created earlier, in 1943, which covers private-sector workers. López Mateos is also remembered for nationalizing the electricity industry and for launching the free textbook program.
