Reserva de la biosfera El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar
El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar is a biosphere reserve in northwestern Sonora, near the border with the United States. It combines a dramatic volcanic field of craters and lava flows with one of the largest active dune fields in North America.
Its landscapes are so otherworldly that they have been compared to the moon, and UNESCO inscribed the reserve as a World Heritage Site in 2013. Don’t confuse it with reserves in other states such as El Vizcaíno in Baja California Sur or Sian Ka’an in Quintana Roo.
