Evolución territorial de la Ciudad de México

For most of the 20th century the Mexican capital was officially called the Distrito Federal (Federal District), or simply “el D.F.” A constitutional reform published on January 29, 2016 renamed it Ciudad de México (CDMX) and gave it a status closer to that of the 31 states, including its own local constitution and congress.

Do not confuse this renaming with the city’s origins: it stands on the site of Tenochtitlán, the Mexica capital conquered in 1521.
