Ciudad de México

Mexico City is the capital of the country and by far its most populous city, with around nine million inhabitants in the city proper and more than twenty million in its metropolitan area, one of the largest urban areas in the world. It was built on the site of the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan.

Until 2016 it was officially called the Distrito Federal (Federal District); it is now the state-level entity Ciudad de México, abbreviated CDMX. Guadalajara and Monterrey are the country’s other great metropolises, but they are much smaller.
