Chichén Itzá

Chichén Itzá was one of the great cities of the Maya civilization, and its pyramid of Kukulcán, known as El Castillo, is famous for the serpent-shaped shadow that appears on its staircase at the equinoxes. In 2007 it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

It lies in the state of Yucatán, near the town of Valladolid. Do not confuse it with sites in neighboring states: Tulum and Cobá are in Quintana Roo, and Palenque is in Chiapas.
