Tratado de Libre Comercio de América del Norte

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA, known in Spanish as TLCAN) was signed by Mexico, the United States, and Canada and came into effect on January 1, 1994, creating one of the largest free trade zones in the world.

In 2020 it was replaced by a new agreement among the same three countries, the USMCA (T-MEC in Spanish). NAFTA’s start date is also linked to the Zapatista uprising, which began the very day the treaty took effect.
