Nacionalización de la banca en México

On September 1, 1982, in his final state-of-the-nation address, President José López Portillo (1976–1982) announced the nationalization of Mexico’s private banks in the midst of a severe debt crisis and peso devaluation; he is remembered for promising to “defend the peso like a dog”. The banks were re-privatized in the early 1990s under Carlos Salinas.

Don’t confuse this with the oil expropriation: it was Lázaro Cárdenas who nationalized the oil industry, in 1938.
