Soraya Jiménez
Soraya Jiménez Mendívil (1977-2013) was a Mexican weightlifter who won gold in the 58 kg category at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, becoming the first Mexican woman ever to win an Olympic gold medal.
Do not confuse her with other celebrated Mexican female Olympians such as María del Rosario Espinoza (taekwondo gold in Beijing 2008) or Ana Gabriela Guevara (track and field); Jiménez’s milestone was being the first woman to reach the top of the podium for Mexico.
