Charrería

Charrería is Mexico’s national sport, born from the cattle-herding skills of horsemen on colonial-era haciendas. It became a formally organized sport in 1933, when its national federation was created and standard rules for competitions were established. In a charreada, teams of charros perform roping and riding events in an arena called a lienzo charro, and women compete in the escaramuza, a precision riding event. In 2016 UNESCO inscribed charrería on its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
