Taxodium huegelii

The ahuehuete, or Montezuma cypress, was declared Mexico’s national tree in 1921; the famous Árbol del Tule in Oaxaca is an ahuehuete with one of the widest trunks on Earth. According to tradition, Hernán Cortés wept beneath an ahuehuete in Popotla after the Noche Triste (June 30, 1520), the night the Mexica drove the Spaniards out of Tenochtitlan with heavy losses.
