Ignacio Allende (1769–1811) was a criollo army captain from San Miguel el Grande who, alongside Miguel Hidalgo, led the first stage of Mexico’s War of Independence. He was captured and executed in 1811, and his hometown was later renamed San Miguel de Allende in his honor, where this phrase is displayed.

Note that Allende was never president of Mexico — he died a decade before independence was achieved. Don’t confuse him with Hidalgo, the priest who launched the uprising with the Grito de Dolores.
