Vicente Guerrero
According to tradition, Guerrero spoke the phrase when the viceregal government sent his own father to offer him a pardon if he abandoned the insurgent cause, and he refused. Guerrero completed independence alongside Iturbide after the Embrace of Acatempan and became president in 1829.
Don’t confuse this phrase with Hidalgo’s: “Pardons are for criminals, not for defenders of the homeland.”
