Benito Juárez (1806-1872), a Zapotec lawyer from Oaxaca, served as president of Mexico from 1858 to 1872. He led the liberal Reform movement and the resistance against the French Intervention and the empire of Maximilian.

His most famous phrase comes from a manifesto issued in 1867, after the republic’s victory over the empire. It is one of the most quoted sentences in Mexican civic life and appears on monuments throughout the country.
