Macario (película)

Macario (1960), directed by Roberto Gavaldón and starring Ignacio López Tarso, tells the story of a poor woodcutter who meets Death on the Day of the Dead; it was the first Mexican film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It is based on a story by B. Traven, a mysterious German-born writer who settled in Mexico and hid his identity all his life.

Traven also wrote The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, the novel behind the famous 1948 Hollywood film shot in Mexico.
