Matilde Montoya

Matilde Montoya (1859-1939) earned her medical degree from the National School of Medicine in 1887, overcoming years of opposition to a woman studying medicine. Her professional examination drew such attention that President Porfirio Díaz himself attended it.

Her achievement opened the door for Mexican women in the professions at a time when universities were an almost exclusively male world.
