Mario Molina

Mario Molina (1943–2020), a chemist born in Mexico City, shared the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Paul Crutzen and F. Sherwood Rowland for showing how chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases destroy the ozone layer. His work helped bring about the Montreal Protocol, the international treaty that phased out CFCs.

He is one of three Mexican Nobel laureates — don’t confuse him with Alfonso García Robles, who won the Peace Prize (1982), or Octavio Paz, who won the Literature Prize (1990).
