What is Mexico City known as?

Mexico City earned the nickname “the City of Palaces” because of the grand colonial mansions and public buildings that line its historic center. The phrase appears in the 1834 book The Rambler in Mexico by the English traveler Charles Latrobe, although it is popularly attributed to the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt.

Don’t mix this nickname up with those of other Mexican cities, such as the City of Eternal Spring (Cuernavaca) or the White City (Mérida).
