Tlaxcala de Xicohténcatl

The city of Tlaxcala, officially Tlaxcala de Xicohténcatl, is the capital of Tlaxcala, Mexico’s smallest state. Its full name honors Xicohténcatl, a leader of the Tlaxcaltec people, who famously allied with Hernán Cortés against the Mexica during the conquest.

Like several Mexican capitals, it shares its name with its state. Nearby Apizaco is an important railway and commercial city, but it is not the capital.
