San Luis Potosí (México)

The city of San Luis Potosí shares its name with the state it governs, a pattern several Mexican capitals follow. It was founded in 1592 after gold and silver were discovered in nearby Cerro de San Pedro, and it grew into one of New Spain’s important mining and trading centers.

Its elegant historic center forms part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the old inland royal road recognized by UNESCO.
