Guanajuato (Guanajuato)

The city of Guanajuato, capital of the state of the same name, was one of the richest silver-mining cities of New Spain. Its underground streets, colorful alleys like the Callejón del Beso, and the Alhóndiga de Granaditas — site of a key 1810 independence battle — make its historic center a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it hosts the Festival Internacional Cervantino every year.

Don’t confuse the capital with León, the state’s largest city and famous shoemaking center, which is not the capital.
