Ciudad de México

Mexico City (Ciudad de México, or CDMX) is the national capital and the seat of the federal government. It was built over Mexico-Tenochtitlan, the Mexica capital founded in 1325 and conquered by the Spanish in 1521.

Until 2016 it was officially called the Distrito Federal (Federal District); it is now a federal entity in its own right, and its metropolitan area is one of the largest in the world.
