Chetumal

Chetumal, on the border with Belize, is the capital of Quintana Roo, the state on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. Many people assume the capital is Cancún, the state’s most famous city, but Cancún is a tourist destination, not the seat of government.

Chetumal was founded in 1898 under the name Payo Obispo and sits on the Bay of Chetumal.
