Who was a renowned Mexican landscape painter?

José María Velasco (1840-1912) is considered Mexico’s greatest landscape painter. He is famous above all for his monumental views of the Valley of Mexico, painted in the 19th century with remarkable scientific precision.

Velasco taught at the Academy of San Carlos, where a young Diego Rivera was among his students. Do not confuse him with Mexico’s muralists, such as Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros, who worked later and in a very different style.
