Rufino Tamayo

Rufino Tamayo (1899–1991), a painter from Oaxaca, created the mural Duality in 1964 for the entrance hall of the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City’s Chapultepec Park. It depicts the cosmic battle between Quetzalcóatl, the feathered serpent, and Tezcatlipoca, shown as a jaguar, symbolizing day and night.

Tamayo is often contrasted with the ‘big three’ muralists — Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros — because his work was less political and more poetic and universal.
