José Luis Cuevas

The Rupture Generation (Generación de la Ruptura) was a group of Mexican artists who, from the 1950s on, broke with the dominance of the nationalist muralist school. José Luis Cuevas (1934–2017), a provocative draftsman famous for his essay ‘La cortina del nopal’ attacking muralism’s monopoly, became its most visible figure; a museum in Mexico City’s historic center bears his name.

Don’t confuse the Ruptura artists with the muralists they rebelled against — Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros.
