Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is Mexico’s most internationally famous painter. After a bus accident in her youth left her in lifelong pain, she painted mostly self-portraits, intense and colorful works exploring her body, her suffering and Mexican identity; roughly a third of her production is self-portraiture.

She was married to the muralist Diego Rivera, so keep them straight: he is known for enormous public murals, she for intimate self-portraits. Her home in Coyoacán, the Casa Azul, is now the Frida Kahlo Museum.
