Calavera literaria

José Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913) was an engraver and illustrator from Aguascalientes, author of the satirical skeleton prints known as calaveras or calaveritas, which mocked politicians and society and accompanied rhyming Day of the Dead verses. His most famous image, La Calavera Garbancera, was later dressed up and renamed “La Catrina” by Diego Rivera.

Posada’s skeletons became lasting symbols of Mexico’s Día de Muertos and influenced generations of Mexican artists.
