Mexico's national Indigenous languages
Mexico is one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world. According to the National Institute of Indigenous Languages (INALI), 68 Indigenous languages, grouped into 11 language families, are spoken in the country, in addition to Spanish. The most widely spoken are Nahuatl, Maya, Tseltal and Tsotsil.
The General Law of Linguistic Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2003) recognizes the Indigenous languages and Spanish as national languages with equal validity. That is why the usual answer to “how many languages exist in Mexico?” is “68 Indigenous languages and Spanish.”
