The Golden Age of Mexican cinema

The Golden Age of Mexican cinema was the period, roughly from the mid-1930s to the late 1950s, when Mexico’s film industry became one of the most successful in the Spanish-speaking world. Its actors include Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, Sara García, María Félix, Dolores del Río and the comedian Cantinflas.

María Félix, “La Doña”, and Dolores del Río were the two great film divas of the era. Sara García (1895–1980) was “the grandmother of Mexican cinema” for the strong-willed grandmothers she played. The Argentine tango singer Libertad Lamarque moved to Mexico in the 1940s and built a long career in Mexican films.
