Seguro Popular
Seguro Popular was a public health program created in 2004 to give medical coverage to people without social security: self-employed workers, the unemployed and, in general, anyone not enrolled in the IMSS or the ISSSTE.
It ended in 2020, when it was replaced by INSABI (Instituto de Salud para el Bienestar), whose functions later passed to IMSS-Bienestar. Don’t confuse it with the IMSS, created in 1943 for private-sector workers, or the ISSSTE, created in 1959 for government workers.
