INE and Elections

The National Electoral Institute, or INE, organizes federal elections and issues voter credentials. Mexico uses competitive elections for offices such as President, senators, deputies, governors, and local offices.

For citizenship learners, INE is the key election institution to recognize. It is separate from political parties and helps administer voting.

The Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) was founded in 1990. Mexico’s federal election day is held on the first Sunday in June of the election year. The National Electoral Institute replaced the Federal Electoral Institute in 2014. The law permitting voting from abroad was approved in 2005, and the first votes were cast in the 2006 election.
