National Symbols and Emblems
Mexico’s three official national symbols are the flag, the coat of arms and the national anthem. They are protected by the Law on the National Coat of Arms, Flag and Anthem, and Flag Day is celebrated every February 24.
Besides the national symbols, Mexico has natural emblems. The golden eagle, which appears on the coat of arms, is considered the national animal. The dahlia, a flower native to Mexico that the Mexica called acocoxóchitl, was declared the national flower in 1963 by President Adolfo López Mateos. It should not be confused with the cempasúchil (marigold), the flower of the Day of the Dead.
