The deer (el venado) was one of the three animals Itzamná chose for the Mayab. It ran through the forest as lightly as the wind.

When it learned that strangers would conquer the Mayab, the deer wept with such sadness that its tears formed pools of water across the land — and that is why, according to the legend, the deer’s eyes always look moist. In the prophecy, its sign is that one day it will cross the whole Mayab in a single leap.
