Torreón is a major city in southwestern Coahuila and the principal urban center of the Comarca Lagunera. It grew rapidly with railroads, irrigated agriculture, commerce, and industry in a dry landscape.

La Perla de La Laguna celebrates the transformation of a desert settlement into a prosperous modern city through the work of its inhabitants. The phrase is even displayed on Torreón’s municipal coat of arms.
